Important Information
Best season: Year-round. Winter offers snow-covered landscapes and fewer crowds. Spring and autumn showcase spectacular natural beauty.
The Hida Wide View train from Nagoya to Takayama offers panoramic mountain scenery — sit on the left side for the best views.
Ryokan check-in is typically between 3–6 PM. Arriving late may result in missing the kaiseki dinner.
Onsen etiquette: Wash thoroughly before entering the bath. Tattoos may be restricted at some facilities — inquire in advance.
Shirakawa-go in winter requires snow boots. The village can receive heavy snowfall — check weather conditions before departure.
Travel Tips
Pack light layers — mountain weather can change quickly, especially in Hakone and Takayama.
Reserve a window seat on the Hida Wide View train when booking — the scenery is the main attraction.
Takayama morning market (Sanmachi Suji) opens at 7 AM — arrive early for the freshest produce and fewer crowds.
Try the local sake in Takayama — the region is famous for its pure mountain water and centuries-old breweries.
Kanazawa's gold leaf ice cream is a must-try — the city produces 99% of Japan's gold leaf.

The most romantic trip we've ever taken. The private onsen in Hakone and the ryokan in Takayama were magical. Shirakawa-go in winter was like a fairy tale.

Perfect escape for nature lovers. Kenroku-en garden was breathtaking and the mountain scenery throughout was incredible. The food was exceptional too.
