厳島

Itsukushima

厳島(いつくしま)は、広島県廿日市市宮島町にある島。瀬戸内海西部、広島湾の北西部に位置する。通称は安芸の宮島(あきのみやじま)、または宮島。

History & Cultural Significance

Itsukushima, or Miyajima, has been a sacred island for centuries, home to the iconic Itsukushima Shrine, which dates back to the 6th century. The shrine's torii gate, famously floating in the sea at high tide, is one of Japan's most recognizable symbols and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The island's spiritual significance is deeply tied to the Shinto belief in the divine presence of nature. Pilgrims have long visited to pray for safe passage and prosperity, and the island remains a place of quiet reverence and cultural heritage.

What to See & Do

Visit the Itsukushima Shrine, where the famous floating torii gate appears to float on the water during high tide. Take a boat tour around the island to see the shrine from different angles and enjoy views of the surrounding sea.

Hike up Mount Misen, the island's highest point, for panoramic views of Hiroshima Bay and the surrounding islands. The path is lined with moss-covered stone steps and small shrines, offering a peaceful and scenic journey.

Atmosphere & Experience

Strolling through Miyajima feels like stepping into a timeless landscape where nature and spirituality intertwine. The gentle sound of waves, the scent of incense, and the sight of red torii gates create an atmosphere of serenity and wonder.

Insider Tips

Visit early in the morning to avoid crowds and capture the best photos of the torii gate at low tide, when it's fully visible on the sandbar.

Try the local specialty, okonomiyaki, a savory pancake made with cabbage, meat, and a sweet and tangy sauce, often cooked right at the restaurant.
