History & Cultural Significance

Mount Moiwa, known as 'Moiwayama' in Japanese, has long been a cherished landmark for the people of Sapporo. Its name is believed to derive from the Ainu word 'mo-iwa,' meaning 'mountain with a wide view,' a fitting description given its panoramic vistas over the city and surrounding landscape.

The mountain has played a central role in local culture, serving as a place of recreation and spiritual reflection. In the early 20th century, it became a popular destination for both residents and visitors, with the construction of the ropeway and road making it more accessible.

What to See & Do

Visitors can take the scenic ropeway up Mount Moiwa, offering breathtaking views of Sapporo and the surrounding countryside. At the summit, the observatory provides an ideal spot for photography and relaxation, especially during sunset when the city lights begin to twinkle below.

In winter, the mountain transforms into a ski resort, with slopes suitable for all skill levels. The snow-covered landscape adds a magical quality to the already stunning scenery, making it a favorite destination for both locals and tourists.

Atmosphere & Experience

Walking along the paths at the base of Mount Moiwa, you’ll feel the peaceful rhythm of nature blending with the energy of the city. Whether you’re hiking through lush forests in spring or gazing out at the glowing cityscape at night, the mountain offers a unique sense of tranquility and connection.
