History & Cultural Significance
Ainoshima, or 'Cat Heaven Island,' is a small, unassuming island in Shingū, Fukuoka, that has gained international fame for its unique feline population. Though it was once a quiet fishing village, the island's reputation as a sanctuary for stray and feral cats began in the 1980s when locals started feeding them, leading to an unexpected surge in their numbers.
The island's history is intertwined with the care of these animals, and over time, it has become a symbol of compassion and coexistence between humans and nature. While not steeped in ancient traditions, Ainoshima's charm lies in its gentle, unpretentious character and the affectionate community that has formed around its cat population.
What to See & Do
Visitors to Ainoshima can explore its winding paths and enjoy the peaceful scenery while encountering dozens of friendly cats lounging on rocks, perched on trees, or peeking from behind buildings. The island is small enough to walk around in under an hour, making it a perfect stop for those looking for a relaxed, off-the-beaten-path experience.
Don't miss the local cat-themed souvenirs and cafes, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee while watching the cats play. The island also offers a scenic view of the surrounding sea, and on clear days, you can see the distant hills of Kyushu.
Atmosphere & Experience
Ainoshima exudes a calm, almost dreamlike atmosphere, where the presence of the cats adds a sense of whimsy and warmth. As you stroll through the narrow streets, the gentle meows and curious glances of the felines create a unique, almost meditative ambiance that invites visitors to slow down and savor the moment.
Insider Tips
Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the cats are most active and likely to be out and about.
Bring some cat treats or small snacks to share with the felines, but always ask permission from locals before feeding them.

現地のヒント
- Check the weather before visiting, as the island can get quite windy and chilly, especially near the water.
- Wear comfortable shoes, as the island's terrain is uneven and includes small hills and rocky paths.
- Respect the cats' space and avoid chasing or disturbing them, as they are wild and may react unpredictably.
- If you're planning to take photos, be patient and move slowly—many cats are camera-shy and may hide if approached too quickly.
- Consider bringing a light jacket, as the sea breeze can make the temperature drop unexpectedly.
