History & Cultural Significance

Ōshima, one of the Geiyo Islands in the Seto Inland Sea, has a rich history deeply intertwined with the maritime traditions of Shikoku. For centuries, the island's residents have relied on fishing and seafaring, shaping a culture that values resilience and connection to the sea.

The island is also known for its unique dialect and customs, which reflect its historical isolation and distinct identity. Local festivals often feature traditional boat races and rituals honoring the ocean, offering visitors a glimpse into the island's enduring heritage.

What to See & Do

Ōshima offers a tranquil escape with its scenic coastal paths and hidden coves. Visitors can explore the island's small villages, where white-washed houses stand against the backdrop of green hills and the shimmering sea.

A must-visit is the Ōshima Shrine, nestled in a quiet grove, where locals come to pray for safe voyages. The island is also a great spot for birdwatching, as it serves as a migratory stop for various species.

Atmosphere & Experience

Walking through Ōshima feels like stepping back in time. The slow pace of life, the sound of waves, and the scent of salt in the air create a serene and meditative experience that lingers long after you leave.
