History & Cultural Significance
The Ōtsuka Museum of Art, located in Naruto, Tokushima Prefecture, was established in 1998 by Otsuka Pharmaceutical to commemorate its 75th anniversary. This unique museum is home to over a thousand full-size ceramic reproductions of some of the most iconic works of art in history, offering visitors an extraordinary opportunity to experience masterpieces from around the world in one place.
Among the highlights are detailed ceramic replicas of the Sistine Chapel ceiling, the Scrovegni Chapel frescoes, and Picasso’s Guernica. These reproductions were created using advanced transfer-printing techniques from high-resolution photographs, ensuring that every brushstroke and detail is preserved with remarkable accuracy.
What to See & Do
Visitors can explore the museum's vast collection, which spans ancient Roman mosaics, Renaissance frescoes, and modern masterpieces. The museum is particularly renowned for its replica of the Triclinium of the Villa of the Mysteries, a stunning example of Roman wall painting that transports guests back to the grandeur of ancient Pompeii.
In addition to the permanent exhibits, the museum occasionally hosts special events and temporary exhibitions, providing fresh perspectives on art and culture. The interactive nature of the displays allows guests to appreciate the scale and detail of these artworks in a way that traditional museums often cannot offer.
