When Does Autumn Foliage Peak?

Unlike cherry blossoms, autumn colors move from north to south. The koyo front begins in Hokkaido's mountains in late September and reaches southern Kyushu by early December.

Hokkaido

Daisetsuzan National Park leads the season. Vibrant yellows and reds against volcanic landscapes.

Tohoku

Mid Oct — Mid Nov

Nikko, Hakone, and the Japanese Alps. Lake Kawaguchiko with Mt. Fuji is iconic.

Kansai & Western Japan

Autumn Foliage Tips

Make the most of koyo season with practical advice from our Japan travel specialists.

Visit Temples Early Morning

Kyoto’s famous temples like Tofuku-ji and Eikan-do can draw thousands of visitors during peak foliage. Visit at opening time (usually 8:30 AM) for the best photography conditions and fewer crowds.

Night Illuminations Are Worth the Queue

Many temples and gardens offer special nighttime light-up events (lightup/yakan tokubetsu haikan). Kiyomizu-dera, Kodai-ji, and Kitano Tenmangu in Kyoto are particularly stunning. Book tickets in advance when possible.

Mountain Areas Peak First

If you’re visiting in October, head to higher elevations — Nikko, Hakone, and the Japanese Alps will be in full color while cities are still green. This also means fewer tourists compared to November’s Kyoto rush.

Pair Foliage with Onsen

Autumn is Japan’s best onsen season. Combine foliage viewing with hot spring stays in Hakone, Kurokawa, or Ginzan. Rotenburo (outdoor baths) surrounded by red maples is the quintessential fall experience.
